[L to R]: Steve Blackman, Frank van Hooft and Jeanette Shorto at a meeting of the Rockingham Lions Club.

Jeanette Shorto is the Community Relations manager at WAIMR and is a popular speaker at clubs and functions.

Jeanette can open the doors into the world of research, from a non-scientific point of view. Jeanette's presentation style is from the heart, giving an insight into some of the research happening at WAIMR. She also talks about WAIMR researchers who are an amazingly dedicated group, committed to finding answers to some of the most debilitating diseases, and bring hope for the future.

Some of the topics covered by Jeanette include:

  • The improved treatments could flow from WAIMR Professor Ruth Ganss' new discovery of specific genes which control blood vessels that feed tumours.
  • Professor Peter Leedman's team discovery of the SLIRP gene. This was a breakthrough delivering new hope for those with breast cancer, prostate cancer and diabetes.
  • Professor Lin Fritschi and her team have identified factors in the workplace which affect cancer.
  • Professor Nigel Laing's WAIMR team has uncovered genetic mutations linked to devastating muscle disorders, including the Laing myopathy, providing families with important answers and better diagnosis.
  • Professor Peter Klinken's team have discovered new genes which are involved in leukemia.
  • The creation by WAIMR Professor George Yeoh of a new cell tracing technique is an important breakthrough that could help liver transplants become a thing of the past sooner than expected.
  • Professor Grant Morahan and his team have made major breakthroughs in our understanding of the genetics of diabetes.
  • Professor Luba Kalaydjieva and colleagues have defined several genetic changes in nerve diseases, and are tackling mental health such as schizophrenia.
